Lunch Box 584: A hill o' soybeans
Today I have some Spam musubi. By now I'm so used to it I don't even think about how funny it is to be eating Spam until I have to tell somebody about it. And then there are some crab rangoon gyoza with neatly wavy shells thanks to a new gyoza press I just got. Below that is the titular pile of edamame. Then there's a strip of omelet acting as a divider, protecting the fresh lychees.

psst, your website post links to an older entry. ;)

crab rangoon gyoza. Those three words make my stomach just GROWL! I tried making rangoons once, and it was EPIC FAIL! I don't know what I did wrong, but they turned out horrid. :( I ended up having to throw the whole lot out. It was a sad day, because I was so excited about making them. :P

Oop. I actually fixed that, then got distracted by soemthing shiny and forgot to upload the file.

What happened with your crab rangoons? There are a few things that can easily go wrong, and ways to get around them.

The cream cheese mix just didn't taste right and I couldn't figure out why. I thought maybe cooking them would help, but it just didn't. It tasted rancid. And my ingredients were FRESH which was even more perplexing.

I followed a recipe I found online (can't remember where) to the letter. I probably should have scaled the recipe WAY down to test it out, but like I said, I was excited. LOL The thought of not having to spend $3 for 10 rangoons when I wanted them was quite appealing. :)

Perhaps, in future, when I get a new food processor, I shall try again with your recipe.

Huh. That is strange. Perhaps the brands weren't that good? I use Philadelphia cream cheese (the low-fat stuff works fine) and Kroger brand crab sticks. I don't have a food processor, so I just chop everything up fine, soften the cheese, and whisk it around.

It WAS Philly cream cheese (there IS NO OTHER BRAND!).. Maybe the crab sticks just weren't up to par.

Or it could be that I had to break up the recipe because my food processor was hella small... I dunno.

Plus, I need to find a store that sells wonton wrappers bigger than those tiny squares, so I can use my gyoza stuffer thingie!

Huh. Well, I'd just suggest trying it again with a smaller batch then. My recipe makes enough for a few people, and if you don't want to fry them all up at once you can freeze the uncooked dumplings and cook them later.

I hope it turns out as well for you as it does for me.
