Lunch Box 590: Red pickles
This is a confused lunch. It doesn't know if it is decent healthy American or Japanese food, or American or Japanese junk food.

Here I have some okonomiyaki, made on a day when I didn't have much in the way of toppings and fillings - so, what the heck, I cut up some turkey bacon and mixed it in. Result: good! (The little container is filled with okonomiyaki sauce, of course.) Then there's the everpresent steamed broccoli and some simmered shiitake mushrooms that think they look classy. And next to the Kool-Aid pickles they actually do. Finally, I have apple slices and almond jelly for dessert.

If you pack almond jelly in your bento lunch, don't expect to be able to eat it with chopsticks. That way lies madness, not to mention humor if anyone sees you. Pack a little fork or toothpick or something you can skewer those slippery bits with.

If you do pack chopsticks to eat the almond jelly with, then I suggest that you always haveYakety Sax playing the background to add +3 hilarity. :)

My gf loves almond jelly. Our dim sum trips are always capped with her trying to eat the big almond or coconut jelly blocks with her chopsticks. Instant culinary Benny Hill.

But if you play Yakety Sax then you have to speed things up to at least triple, and at that point the almond jelly would shoot around too fast to see.

A question about the okonomiyaki... Have you ever used the already shredded "cole slaw" mix you can get in bags? I figure, this would be a great time saver for me, and then I can use what's left over for other recipes. And if I use this... how much do you think I should use? I wonder if there's a "head to shred" conversion chart on the bag.

Nah, I just chop up a few leaves from a head of cabbage. Heads of cabbage are cheap, bags of pre-cut cabbage aren't, and I have a mortgage.

As far as how much to use, I've been eyeballing it from day one. Shred enough so the batter is sticking it together, as opposed to the cabbage floating around in the batter, if you know what I mean.
