Lunch Box 233: Eatin' green [Oct. 16th, 2006|07:38 pm]

Today's intensely green lunch contains seafood yakisoba made with yomogi soba. That's soba noodles with mugwort. Mmm-mmm, sounds delicious, doesn't it? Well, it is tastier than the name would imply. Yomogi soba has its own taste, which is a pleasant change from the usual soak-up-the-surrounding-flavors noodliness of, er, noodles. Adding to the greenness is the cabbage I stir-fried with it - outer leaves, which are the greenest - and the everpresent steamed broccoli. I also have simmered shiitake mushrooms, rice, rambutans, and honeycrisp apple slices. Honeycrisps are a good combination of sweet and tart, by the way. I'd say they're somewhere in between braeburns and granny smiths.

I've never heard of those type of soba before. Interesting.

Btw, the recipe page for the website seems to be having issues. It was working yesterday. I made gyoza from your recipe but I think I put too much filling in or overdid something. So I broke it up & mixed it with rice & it was great! :)

Oh - I forgot to say - I used chicken instead of beef or pork. I just threw chicken chunks, the cabbage & the onion into my food chopper together.

Re the site problems, yeah, an misconfigured firewall was chopping my uploads short. It's fixed now. Modern technology - it's great when it works.

As for the recipe changes - hey, whatever works! If you end up with something good, who cares if you tweaked it here and there? I play with recipes all the time, myself.

the only thing that's missing is the tasty green yomogi mochi.

Alas, my freezer is devoid of mochi at the moment. Must get some more the next time I go to 99 Ranch Market!
