Lunch Box 541: Stuff to eat [Apr. 16th, 2008|07:43 pm]
[Tags|, , ]

Hmm. What clever things can I say about beef & broccoli stir-fry, baked purple potatoes, and chocolate chip melon pan? Well, purple potatoes are plenty nifty, but they kind of stand on their own and speak for themselves. Broccoli beef isn't particularly amazing, but it tastes really nice and stuff. As for the melon pan, I cut it because I would have had a hard time fitting it all in without squeezing out some of the potatoes. I have no idea why I didn't put the cut edge against the top of the box.

Completely off-topic, if you just happen to find yourself at a screening of a movie titled Nerdcore Rising, look for me. I'm the woman in the denim jacket and red MC Frontalot T-shirt at the sale table in Atlanta. I'm on the right side on the screen, right in the front, for all of 5 seconds. My name is also in the credits. Anyone want my autograph?

Lunch Box 538: B is for Chicken and Eggs [Apr. 8th, 2008|07:19 pm]
[Tags|, , , , , ]

Oyakodon is one of the uglier dishes in my recipe book. Honestly, while you're cooking it it looks like a swamp. And it is - a swamp of delicious chicken and eggs over rice. Somehow I made a letter B with this batch. B is for Bento, that's good enough for me.

Then there's baked purple sweet potato, steamed broccoli, grapes, and chocolate chip melon pan. I do likes me the chocolate chip melon pan. My friends and family do too; I often get requests for melon pan. As long as I have the time to make it - it takes about 4 hours because the bread has to rise - I'm happy to.

Lunch Box 509: Albino hedgehogs [Feb. 5th, 2008|07:29 pm]

Recently someone requested that I make some pearl meatballs. Now, I cook what I wanna cook - ain't nobody the boss of me but ME! But, on the other hand, pearl meatballs are tasty. So, here ya go. Or here I go, actually. On the side are steamed green beans, dried cherries, and chocolate chip melon pan.

This past weekend I went to a potluck at a friend's house. I bought home-baked French bread and a batch of the above chocolate chip melon pan. They liked 'em, the melon pan especially. I'd say melon pan are pretty good party food. A little exotic, but not enough so that it'll put anyone off.

Lunch Box 465: I have weird leftovers. [Nov. 9th, 2007|07:17 pm]

[Current Music |Freeway Shuffle]

I had plans yesterday. I was going to cook some niku-jyaga and it was gonna be awesome. And then I got trapped in the highway because the police shut it down for a manhunt. No joke, they were going car to car, searching some for a bank robber who had been slipped a tracking device. It was all on the news, so if the robber turned on his radio he probably took out the tracking thingie and snuck it onto someone else's car. Anyway, I got home very late, hungry, angry, and in no mood to wait another hour or so until the food was ready to eat. At times like this, leftovers and a small stockpile of frozen food are lifesavers.

So what did I have left over? The freezer offered me crab rangoon gyoza, which I gratefully accepted. The fridge had boiled baby octopus - doesn't everyone have some of that in their fridge? - stir-fried zucchini peel, and a few bits of steamed purple cauliflower. The freezer then upped the ante with chocolate chip melon pan. Wham, bam, and 5 minutes later I'm closing the lid on my lunch box.

Lunch Box 460: It was a dark and stormy night [Nov. 1st, 2007|07:26 pm]

I packed this lunch on Halloween, which may or may not explain the spookiness (read: poor lighting) of this lunch. It includes, in no particular order, a bit of priest pork pie, two pieces of inari-zushi, some baked eggplant slices, steamed broccoli, and chocolate chip melon pan.

The tofu bags for this inari-zushi came in a can, and they taste fine to me.

My Halloween getup this year was a denim kimono I hand-sewed myself. Even though it's not relevant to bento lunches, I'm stinkin' proud of it, and have stuck a couple of photos taken at work behind this cut. )

Lunch Box 458: Chocolate improves anything. [Oct. 29th, 2007|06:55 pm]

Today's lunch has some odd sushi. I didn't have a lot of the stuff on hand that I usually put in sushi, so I rolled up what I had: some crab stick, eggplant, and steamed long beans. Weird, huh? But ya gotta take chances every so often or life becomes boring. Then there's baked purple sweet potato and steamed long beans. On the other side I have marinated, stir-fried tofu, which was born of the marriage of half a block of tofu with some leftover teriyaki marinade. And baby carrots, and, capping it all off, chocolate chip melon pan. Yes, melon pan made with chocolate chip cookie dough instead of sugar cookie dough. If that does not impress you, I know thee not.
