Lunch Box 608: Stuff I like to eat [Nov. 24th, 2008|10:01 pm]
[Tags|, , , , , ]

On a cold day curry tastes especially delicious. It's not even hot curry; I only make the mild stuff. Still, it's great cold-weather comfort food for me. So today I have some chicken & vegetable curry, naan, steamed broccoli, golden raisins, and craisins. Looks like I have a whole bento box full of comfort food, actually. Perfect for those stressful days at work. And, believe me, today has been one of those.

Lunch Box 598: Lotus Position [Oct. 27th, 2008|07:35 pm]
[Tags|, , , , , , , ]

Happy Monday! If such a thing exists, that is.

Hmm, that's not a good way to start out. Oh well. Here's food! Namely: broiled steak cut up to chopstick-able size and mixed in with mushrooms; flavored lotus slices, the flavoring being pseuki yaki juice, which is rather odd with the aforementioned steak; plenty of shelled edamame; baked white sweet potato, which I would not recommend because it was barely sweet - I'd say it was more like a slightly-sweet gold potato; and persimmon & craisins.

Lunch Box 596: One Order of Disorder [Oct. 20th, 2008|07:42 pm]

It was clean-out-the-fridge day, but then every day is clean-out-the-fridge day. I just have to decide which part to clean out. Some of you know what I'm talking about.

Anyhow, here's some maki sushi, baked purple sweet potato, simmered shiitake mushrooms, spinach, orange segments, golden kiwi, and craisins. I tried to make it look kinda jumbled and funky, but now I see that it has my usual semi-pathological, art-college-grad set of patterns and rhythms. Sometimes I think my lunches would come out that way if I put on a blindfold and threw stuff across the room in the general direction of my lunch box. But - hey, look at the sweet potato. Some odd colors there, huh? Parts of it were purple, and parts were whitish. Usually they have some shading on the inside, but it's rarely this pronounced.

Lunch Box 428: Golden Brown [Sep. 6th, 2007|07:49 pm]
[Tags|, , , , , , , , , ]

Ahh, leftovers. Leftover rice, leftover shrimp, leftover shiitake, leftover everything. Put it together right and people wouldn't know it's stone soup unless you advertise it. So, here's some chirashi-zushi, takoyaki with mayonnaise, edamame, and a fruit salad made with grapes, palm seeds, and craisins. Finally, I have Nutter Butter cookies, and even those are leftovers. I brought them back from Dragon Con.

For me, Nutter Butters are the official cookie of giving blood. I used to give blood every time the Red Cross came by my office building, and then sit at the table munching Nutter Butters and drinking fruit juice. But then the Red Cross decided that I have Mad Cow Disease and stopped taking my blood. The blood drive at Dragon Con was by another organization... one that always flunks me because my iron level is low by 0.1%. My blood isn't good enough for anybody any more. But they did give me a T-shirt and some cookies for trying.

Lunch Box 427: Can't go wrong with sushi. [Sep. 5th, 2007|07:08 pm]

I'm back from Dragon*Con. Did you miss me?

I should know better than to ask questions like that.

I'm in a back-to-basics mood, and what could be more basic to bento lunches than sushi? So I packed a variety of 'em, including tamago sushi, smoked salmon sushi, shiitake sushi, and shrimp sushi. Up above those is chicken musubi, which is like Spam musubi except it's made with teriyaki chicken breast. On the right I have some baked Japanese sweet potato and edamame, and a fruit salad made with grapes, palm seeds, craisins, and blueberries.

Lunch Box 423: Octopalooza [Aug. 21st, 2007|08:25 pm]
[Tags|, , , , , , , ]

I was having too much fun packing this lunch. First came the naked omurice - I ran out of eggs before I ran out of omurice filling, so I'm using it as regular fried rice - topped with octopus tentacles. The last time I made octopus fritters I clipped off all the cute curly tentacles, and here they are. Aren't they pretty? I plan to show this lunch around the office just to see people squirm.

But wait, there's more octopus! I have takoyaki (octopus dumplings) and octopus fritters, with a little container of okonomiyaki sauce for both of those. Then there's steamed pole beans, banana bread, and craisins.

Lunch Box 422: Octopus & Garden [Aug. 20th, 2007|07:09 pm]
[Tags|, , , , , , , , , ]

f this lunch's photo creeps you out, you're not alone.

Today I have some pork pies, which are my basic meat pies made with pork. Did you know that "pork pie" is British rhyming slang for "lie"? (And if you've played Dragon Quest 8 and been puzzled by Yangus's speech, "brown bread" is slang for "dead." This has been another *THUD* Useless Fact.)

Ahem. The pies are nestled in a nice field of stir-fried cabbage. On the other side I have some baked purple sweet potato, which means I finally went out to 99 Ranch Market again! (It was murderously hot, but I was desperate. The area the produce & cookware section was in is gone, and the produce is crammed into a much smaller area. The produce selection was also, to be honest, a bit anemic, but it looked like they were still in the process of rearranging things.) Finally, I gots a fruit salad made with apple, palm seeds, craisins, and blueberries.

Lunch Box 417: Sushi 'n' stuff [Aug. 13th, 2007|07:16 pm]
[Tags|, , , , , , , ]

Time to roll the sushi! Here's some cucumber, crab, & cream cheese sushi with cucumber maki filling in the spaces between 'em. And edamame and baked sweet potato. And on the desserty side, bulla and craisins.

This is a short entry because if I go much longer I run the risk of going into another griping jag about Atlanta and it's stinking hot weather... aw, crud. Sorry. I shut up now.

Lunch Box 413: Recycling is good. [Aug. 6th, 2007|09:27 pm]
[Tags|, , , , , , , , , , ]

The main item in today's lunch is a strange hybrid of oden and hunter's stew. The last time I made oden I used light soy sauce, which is much saltier than the regular stuff. It wasn't so bad when I was eating the chunky stuff, but the broth itself - whew, salty! So, when I finished the solid bits I thinned out the broth to half strength with water and threw in a bunch of veggies and stuff - potatoes, quail eggs, squash, cabbage, carrots, shiitake, seafood medley - and basically made a second stew. It turned out good.

I have the some of my usual staples: edamame and a fruit salad made with apple, orange, craisins, and blueberries. And I also have banana bread, which I baked for the first time ever this weekend and it turned out just perfect. I was really impressed with how easy and delicious it is. I love it when new dishes turn out so well!
