Lunch Box 577: No discretion [Jul. 14th, 2008|07:33 pm]
[Tags|, , , , , , , ]

Today's lunch includes a pair of hot dog octopi that appear to be in the middle of an intense discussion, and some smoked salmon sushi with cucumber, which is to say I just strapped a thin slice of cucumber onto the top of the rice block with the fish. Then there's edamame, baked Japanese sweet potato, carrot & raisin salad, and banana bread.

Lunch Box 555: Line up! [May. 14th, 2008|07:48 pm]
[Tags|, , , , , , , , ]

This is one seriously orderly lunch. I don't know how that happens, as I'm a clutter queen. Oh well, I know that after being carried around on my two-hour bus-train-bus commute it'll look like the inside of a three-year-old's toy box.

Anyhow, left-to-right, there's smoked salmon sushi, tamago sushi, baked purple sweet potato, steamed long beans, shelled edamame, longans, and a piece of taro mochi.

Lunch Box 554: Secondary colors [May. 13th, 2008|07:35 pm]
[Tags|, , , , , , ]

I've hardly made any sushi in, what, a year? Now all of a sudden I decide I want lots of it. So, here's some smoked salmon sushi and hantako sushi, the latter of which is my fancy way of saying I strapped half a baby octopus to a rice block. I mainly do that because the tentacles curl up so pretty and spirally, I want to find a way to display them. Then there's some baked purple sweet potato arranged in a way that I thought was artistic, but now looks kind of corny to me. Finally, some zucchini & onion stir-fry and carrot & raisin salad.

Lunch Box 496: Nurse, hand me that pizza cutter, stat! [Jan. 11th, 2008|07:36 pm]
[Tags|, , , , , , , , ]

Presentation counts. All of this stuff - smoked salmon sushi, steamed broccoli, baked Japanese sweet potato, pizza, and a fruit salad made with apple, persimmon, and pink orange - is delicious. However, isn't it a bit weird to see pizza in among all that other healthy and/or Asian-type stuff? (The pizza is homemade, and is a whole lot healthier than regular pizza because it's non-greasy.) But what I really shouldn't have done was slice the pizza into little squares. Sure, it's easier to eat with chopsticks that way, but pizza cut into squares reminds me uncomfortably of school cafeteria pizza. Ugh!

Thankfully, I was able to subdivide it into triangles, which de-ughified it.

Lunch Box 430: Glorious chaos [Sep. 11th, 2007|06:54 pm]
[Tags|, , , , , , ]

Over a year ago I tried making inari-zushi (rice in a seasoned bag of fried tofu) and was quite unsatisfied with the results. So unsatisfied that I pretty much put it out of my mind, and managed to forget that I'd made it before. Well, last weekend I found some inari tofu wrappers and decided to give it a go. And this time it turned out pretty good! So here's a lunch that includes inari-zushi, smoked salmon sushi, stir-fried vegetables, a star-shaped boiled egg, and mochi.

This lunch may look like it was thrown randomly into the box, but there actually is an underlying order. I like the "treasure chest" look, where at first you see a jumble of good things rather than discrete portions. However, because of my fussy type-A style I rarely manage to do that.

Lunch Box 427: Can't go wrong with sushi. [Sep. 5th, 2007|07:08 pm]
[Tags|, , , , , , , , , , , , , ]

I'm back from Dragon*Con. Did you miss me?

I should know better than to ask questions like that.

I'm in a back-to-basics mood, and what could be more basic to bento lunches than sushi? So I packed a variety of 'em, including tamago sushi, smoked salmon sushi, shiitake sushi, and shrimp sushi. Up above those is chicken musubi, which is like Spam musubi except it's made with teriyaki chicken breast. On the right I have some baked Japanese sweet potato and edamame, and a fruit salad made with grapes, palm seeds, craisins, and blueberries.

Lunch Box 391: The other blue meat [Jul. 2nd, 2007|09:25 am]
[Tags|, , , , , , , , , ]

Still not done with the blue food! I finally tried blue-ifying some meat, specifically squid, and here you see the result: squid sushi made with blue squid. I had most of the squid with a teriyaki dinner, but I saved these two pieces to record for all time my complete hardcoreness.

I also have smoked salmon sushi, to contrast with the blue squid (and blue lunch box - not the best planning, that), zucchini & onion stir-fry, Sesame Crisp Flakes, and a few broken-up sticks of Goka (5 fruits) Pocky. Not pictured: some dried cherries I put under the top lid of the box in the space where the chopsticks would have gone. If I'd thought of it earlier I would have stuck the cherries in with the sesame brittle and put the Pocky in the lid, where it could have rested in its original unbroken state.

Lunch Box 370: The big W! [May. 25th, 2007|08:53 pm]
[Tags|, , , , , , ]

I've been in a mood to restrict, which I won't allow myself to do, but I will compromise by using a smaller box until the mood passes. That gives me a smaller serving so I feel a bit better. (But I'll probably be ravenous by the time I get home. Stoopid body and its stoopid needs.)

Anyway! Here are some smoked salmon sushi, with little nori "obi" belts to help keep the rice blocks together. There are some simmered shiitake mushrooms. There's stir-fried red cabbage which is purple, hot dog octopi which are red, and Kool-Aid pickles that are blue.

Lunch Box 329: Skins [Mar. 23rd, 2007|07:40 pm]
[Tags|, , , , , , , , , , ]

Today's Brilliant Innovation™ is fried potato skins. These were a byproduct of the potato croquettes, actually. I was frying up stuff anyway, and... hmm, why not throw in some potato peelings when I'm done? And, hey, they turned out well! Some even puffed up into little pillows. Now, do you have any idea how hard it was not to eat them all while they were hot?

The rest of the stuff is the usual end-of the-week medley. There be, in no particular order, smoked salmon sushi made nigiri-style (meaning I was lazy and just shaped a few slugs of rice with my hands rather than busting out the rice mold), more southern-fried potato croquettes, steamed broccoli, steamed kabocha, sakura mochi (mochiko version), and some grapes.

If humans were filter feeders, and if pollen had much nutritional value, I would not have to pack lunches for the next few months. If you're in Atlanta you know what I'm talking about. *achoo*

Lunch Box 282: Cloud potatoes [Jan. 12th, 2007|12:15 pm]
[Tags|, , , , , , , , ]

It's the end of the week and I have little energy for cooking. Thank goodness I can make bento lunches out of leftovers and a few things that take only a few minutes to prepare! I have obimake enoki - enoki mushrooms wrapped in turkey bacon - four pieces of smoked salmon sushi, some baked purple sweet potato, snow peas stir-fried in olive oil, half of a persimmon, and pomegranate seeds.

Most of the purple sweet potatoes - also called Okinawan yams, though yams are an entirely different plant - I've eaten have been dark purple, so much so that they photograph almost black. This one was lighter, and shaded in such a way that it made me think of the Photoshop cloud filter. Tastes just the same, though.

Lunch Box 280: What bento should be [Jan. 10th, 2007|11:31 am]
[Tags|, , , , , , , , , , , ]

Here's a downright hardcore bento for ya! I start out with tamago sushi and smoked salmon sushi, because it's been too long since I made sushi. The tamago sushi, BTW, is made with slices of rolled omelet rather than flat slabs of egg because I like the pretty spiral pattern. Then I have some turkey bratwurst cut into coins, baked sweet potato, snow peas stir-fried in olive oil, and a fruit salad with grapefruit, apple, and pomegranate seeds.

The turkey brat wasn't really that appalling gray. It seems that there's always something in my bento boxes that doesn't photograph just right. Either the rice will be glaring white, or the purple sweet potato will be almost black, or the carrots will look like they're made of neon. That's what I get for not being a professional photographer.

Lunch Box 197: Hybrid fruit? [Aug. 14th, 2006|08:03 pm]
[Tags|, , , , , , , , , , , ]

Food. Spam musubi. Smoked salmon sushi. Steamed broccoli with Spanish cheese that Maria still can't remember the name of. Daifuku. Tamarind. Fruit salad.

The fruit salad has apples, grapes, and something new to me: golden kiwi fruit. They're like regular kiwis except that the skins aren't as hairy, and, well, they're yellow inside. While cutting them I though that it looked like someone had hybridized a kiwi fruit and a banana.

Lunch Box 182: All this and no raw fish? [Jul. 19th, 2006|10:10 pm]
[Tags|, , , , , , , , , ]

It's been too long since I've had a good helping of rice in my bento, and also too long since I've made sushi. So, here we go!

I actually made the sushi with sushi rice as opposed to plain ol' unflavored rice. I use about half the recipe states, though; I don't like vinegar to compete with the other flavors. Up top we have crab & cucumber sushi with some added egg. (Actually, I was trying to make futomaki, but I didn't use long enough nori sheets for that. I'll try again.) Then we have smoked salmon sushi, rice blocks topped with rolled omelet (you could call it tamago sushi, but I want to cook the egg properly before calling it that), and four tuna & mayonnaise maki. On the other side, edamame, apple slices, and longans.

Lunch Box 156: Bacon! [May. 26th, 2006|07:54 pm]
[Tags|, , , , , , , , , , ]

Lately I've been packing a lot of Japanese-style "all sorts of stuff" bentos. That's the happy result of cooking a whole lot of stuff in one evening, refrigerating or freezing the results, and then supplementing it with this and that during the week. Can you tell that I recently lucked into a sale on enoki mushrooms?

Today I have smoked salmon sushi, bacon sushi, obimake enoki, steamed broccoli, tamarind, bin-bin rice crackers, apple, kiwi fruit, oranges, and lychees. Yummy.

The bacon sushi is one of my odd ideas; I can't dodge the blame by claiming I found it somewhere else. I've wrapped these with nori to hold the bacon onto the rice. Because bacon is firmer than usual sushi toppings it takes a little finesse to eat these. I found it works best to bite up rather than down, to use the lower incisors to cut with rather than the upper ones. I hope that makes sense.

Here's a little something featuring steamed beef buns, steamed broccoli, smoked salmon sushi, and half a mango. And... um, what else is there to say about that?
